Portal Gun: Almost Done! by techgeekgirl Portal Gun: Almost Done! by techgeekgirl
Hello again!

I'm almost finished with my portal gun! And I better get the rest of it done soon because Comic-Con is THIS WEEKEND! :iconimhappyplz:

Last weekend I was able to make significant progress on the build, including finishing the painting (including decals!), mounting the top and bottom shells, and assembling the lighting. At the top you can see how the lights in the center chamber will look (thanks to diffusion film!). All that's left is to attach the 2 halves and put on the claws and wires.

More pictures to come, and I'm sure I'll do some sort of write-up on the building process, so stay tuned and let me know what you think!

And credit where it's due: Thanks to :iconrinoa-lewis: and :iconnull-entity: for all their help and a big thanks to my dad, who knows how to work miracles with just a dremel!

EDIT: It's finished! Here's the final product:

There's 2 sets of 3 LEDs, one set on each end of the tube. And yes, they do use normal AA batteries!

I like the glowing tubes.
I used some glass fibers to scatter the light insisde the small tube as can be seen here: [link]
If you use sound make sure it is loud enough!
I have about 20W Speakers but you hardly hear it when there are a lot of people around making noise.

Yeah the original speaker I used wasn't cutting it, so I used a set of mini portable speakers and wired up a connector and it worked like a charm! (video: [link])

have you built your speakers inside the gun or are they outside connected with a cable?
I am thinking of making (another) companion cube filled with more powerful Speakers.
Already built the sound box just need a bigger companioncube that can also be used as a backpack.

I was able to fit a pair of mini-speakers (I think they're called tweakers) inside the back of the gun (under the large white shell). I then put holes in the canister so that the sound would get out better). Here's a picture: [link]

It looks amazing so far! Looks almost like the official replica, which is saying something because the other DIY portal guns I've seen have been kind of sloppy.

Haha I wish I worked for them! But sadly no  This is just something I decided to do partly for SDCC 2012 and partly because I like to mix art and technology to make cool stuff! (Plus it keeps me out of trouble on the weekends ;))

Well I've been working on this on and off (most weekends) since February so I'd say about 75+ hours... but don't quote me on that!

Heheh Kinda like me and the Left 4 Dead Comic.

I bound and printed the online PDF about 5 months before they announced or released the official hard copy :P.

I then started collecting art for a Portal 1/2 book and they go an announce that is coming eventually..

DAMN YOOOOOUUUUUU VALVE :D
